Mediating adoptions since 1980
FFIA is a voluntary non-profit and non-religious democratic organisation, supervised by the Swedish Intercountry Adoptions Authority (MIA), the central authority for intercountry adoptions in Sweden. FFIA was founded in 1979 and has official recognition since 1980 for working with intercountry adoption placements. There is a board of directors with a wide range of different backgrounds and experiences. FFIA works in several different areas, intercountry adoptions, member activities, aid and sponsorship activities and education.
FFIA's office is located in Gothenburg where the adoption placements are administered by a professional staff. The main intent of the association is to provide non-profit assistance in intercountry adoption by means of:
- providing information about the concept of adoption and the requirements for adopting a child from abroad
- striving for the adoption of children who for various reasons cannot be cared for by their biological parents
- maintaining and furthering contact between adoptive families
- creating the preconditions for a network of parents and of children
- promoting adoptive children's cultural heritage
- working against prejudice towards people due to other ethnic or national origin
- promoting children's development through aid projects in their countries of origin
- providing education about adoption
- The best interest of the child as expressed in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is paramount for the work of the association.
